Against Cyborg, I wonder where were her Beasts, biggrin

I don't watch MMA, cause I don't have cable in the house.  But

Cyborg won by TKO.

Ya Carano made a mistake of not pressing a ground advantage when she got it. Still...hard to rationalize calling a fight with 1 second left in a round. But hey....things could be very, very, very different in the EFW. You just never knowwink

If the other two rounds were the same as the first, Cyborg still would have won if the match went on, but every analysis I saw before yesterday agreed that Carano had a chance if Cyborg didn't put her away in the first round, so to see the ref stop it right at the buzzer irks the hell out of me. Especially since Carano didn't seem to be in that beat up when they showed her after the match, which suggests to me that the ref jumped the gun.

Actually, boys, I don't think the ref jumped the gun. He's in a tough position. From all that I read and from the extensive highlights in saw on Sportsnet (yes, we have sports networks here in Canada. Imagine that,) Gina took a beating at the end of the round.

She took 15 unanswered punches and, apparently, the ref warned her twice to defend herself, as holding your arms up against your head in a protective position is not an "intelligible defense," before he called the fight. At that point, he possibly didn't know there was only 1 second left in the round. His biggest responsibility at that point is the safety of the fighter (see boys, in the EFW, we're not conditioned to worrying about the "safety" of the fighters,) not turning his head and seeing how much time is left in the round. It is also possible (and I have no idea if this is the case) that he determined Gina took too many blows over the entire match for it to continue.

From what I read, the crowd was on their feet the entire time and the girls we going at it to the max, without even a 3 second lull. Let's see this as an opportunity that Gina and Cyborg have helped women's MMA establish itself even further and look for them to have a rematch in the not-too-distant future.

Hey, maybe this will even, over a longer term, give more legitimacy to woman's wrasslin' (although that'll be the case for TNA way before the WWE.)

Damn.  Guess this outcome won't stop Nate from pushing "The Most Dangerous Woman on the Planet ..... NOT!" Gina Carano.  I'd rather see Cope and Cowan (who both have better pics) get pushed over her.  Well, on second thought, I do have more pics of Gina thanks to this fight.

But back to the fight itself....

1) Even though both women entered at the same weight, it sure seemed like Cyborg was the bigger fighter.

2) Gina was doing well early but I think she got overwhelmed by Cyborg's work rate.  Cyborg had Gina constantly backing up and I'm sure it  took her out of her comfort zone.

3) I agree with Daigz that the ref jumping in didn't taint the match's outcome.  (a) It's about the fighters' safety and Gina had stopped trying to get away or counter.  (b) The 2nd round would've picked up right where the 1st round left off.

4) Watching Gina eat Cyborg's fists of fury is hot as hell!  I'm all in favor of a rematch.

to answer Ed's points, and a few others...

1) Cyborg definitley carries herself at a much bigger weight than Carano does....evidenced by the fact that she weighed in at 157 for her last fight. After the weight cut, id say Cyborg has at least 15lbs on Gina.

2) I'm not so sure overwelmed, just had a bad game plan. Gina had a huge shot early on, when she fell right into a mounted position on top of Cyborg, and chose to stand up instead of letting the fists fly. Another fight, possibly different outcome.

3a) I think Gina was trying to get saved by the bell. When there's less than ten seconds left a ref usually wont call a match like that. Cheap? yes. Effective? It's worked for tons of people.
3b) Hard to say that. Again, I've seen people get annihalted round 1, and come back to win. Hell....just look at the first Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir match. Brock pounds the living crap out of Mir, yet somehow gets caught.

4) I'm in favor of a rematch. Mostly cause there's no one else in the women's division worthy of the shot. Carano/Cyborg have both pretty much already annihalated everyone.

I find it funny hearing some female fighters jumping on Gina's back. Granted, 90% of them were jealous of her to begin with. People are acting like it's a "huge upset" when pretty much every prediction had Cyborg winning the fight. As Nick said, most experts said Carano's best chance was to get out of the first. Cyborg has never really been forced to go "the distance" whereas Gina's always improved as the fight goes on and her opponents stamina gets blown. Would it make a difference? Who knows.

And as Daigz said, the fight was all action, and they beat the hell out of each other. That brief clip posted doesn't show it, but Gina definitley did her share of damage. A rematch could be interesting.

Just something I read on wrestlingobserver.com. Found it humorous, if oh so true.

Somewhere, Chyna is jealous. That was my first thought (and Tweet) after the conclusion of the Gina Carano vs. Cris Cyborg Santos main event. She-beast heel turns babyface by thrashing the buxom superstar. To make matters better, the finish has just a hint of controversy. Makes a rematch (where both parties have the potential to be paid at least triple what they could make in any other matchup) easier to promote.

MMA does erroneously get compared to pro graps quite often, but in this particular case, relating the two is spot on. And if in a rematch Gina fights a war of attrition, gets to the brink of victory and then gets the rug pulled out from under her by a blood stoppage, the FBI should subpoena Jim Cornettes phone records to make sure he hasnt become head booker.

It's quite interesting to see how everyone in the media and elsewhere all jump on Gina Carano like a pack of hyenas.

Yes, I've thought that as well; even on the round-up on Showtime, the commentators had a sort of "well, off to the glue factory with her" mentality.

I feel a little sorry for her. It's tough for such a great fighter to face her first defeat and ruined record, and in these circumstances. I just wished people would stop ****ting on her for it.

"Is she really serious about MMA?"

"Is women MMA gonna die without Gina's face?"

"Did Randy Couture prepare her properly?"

Even her opponent, Santos, went "She can keep her title of being the face of women MMA. But I got the title right here" after the match.

I happen to think Gina Carano seems like a pretty cool girl, and her beauty and fighting skills just make her very unique in the entertainment business. If she wants to branch out into other fields, hell, why not if she has got the goods?

Just my 2 cents - I just feel bad that the media's putting the salt on her wound as if she was overhyped. Nobody hyped her more than those in the media.

I would like to see Beth Horn kick Gina's ass in real life. That would be hot. :)

Beth certainly looks like a bruiser, but I think Gina would take her down.

Which would also be pretty hot.
